HDK cancels Black Sea tour due to violent protests
Violent protests and attacks on the People's Democratic Congress (HDK) delegation have led to the cancellation of the delegation's tour in the Black Sea region which began two days ago.
In the scope of the tour, which is performed for the purpose of informing the public about the peace process and democratic solution to the Kurdish question, the delegation made the first visit to Çorum where they met the governor and visited Haci Bektaşi Veli Cultural Association. The tour continued on the second day in Sinop where an ultranationalist group attempted to attack the delegation on Monday. The BDP deputies and HDK executives in the delegation had to wait for nine hours before leaving the teacher's lodge which had been surrounded by hundreds of people chanting slogans against Kurds and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The group threw stones and broke some of the windows of the building.
The delegation made the next visit to Samsun where they were in the same way subjected to an attack by an ultranationalist group who tried to enter the hotel BDP deputies were holding a press conference. The group threw stones to press members and police when they were prevented from entering the hotel.
In a statement after the incident, the delegation BDP Istanbul deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder announced that they cancelled the tour, saying; “We do not want to walk around in company with a police convoy. We want to have a free meeting with the people”.
The delegation will return to Ankara today.
In a statement on the incidents, BDP co-chair Gültan Kışanak condemned the attacks and criticized the Interior Ministry and provincial officials for not taking any precautions against provocations despite being informed about the tour beforehand.
