People's Democratic Congress (HDK) marched from Galatasaray High School to Taksim Square Wednesday afternoon. Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Istanbul deputy Sebahat Tuncel and Mersin deputy Ertuğrul Kürkçü were also among the crowd in solidarity with the Taksim resistance.
Speaking here, BDP deputy Tuncel pointed out that Taksim Square has once again gained a political identity with the public resistance which -she said- has politicized all the streets in Turkey and Kurdistan. Tuncel underlined that the resistance will not end until the achievement of freedom, adding, “They have distorted the cruelty we have been subjected to for the last 30 years now. The terrorists of this 30 years have now become çapulcu [Chapulling is a newly-coined word derived from the 2013 protests in Turkey after Erdogan's speech. He used the word "çapulcu" (normally means "looter", "marauder") to describe the peaceful demonstrators and then the social sites adapted this word to English with a new meaning: fighting for one's rights. In a turn of events, the protesters quite quickly decided to take over the term to describe themselves as "çapulcu" and completely changed the meaning. Within days, it seemed that what was once a term describing something negative became the opposite]. Terrorists and çapulcular (plural form of çapulcu) must unite now and liberalize this country. The victory will be achieved by those who are resisting on streets now. This is what we have witnessed in the struggle we have been giving for dozens of years”.
Speaking after, Mersin deputy Kürkçü said they owned this resistance to the youngsters and women resisting against police violence for a week now. “This struggle is too multi-layered to attribute to a single political movement. People have said 'Enough' to listening to the unending preaches of the Prime Minister. They voiced their objection against the sultan caricature that is trying to build a barrack in the middle of Taksim Square”, he said.
Remarking that the course of the Taksim resistance will be determined by the people in the square, Kürkçü said, “Just like the French commune which determined the fate of the French liberation struggle, the Taksim Square has taken the Turkish struggle in its hands”.
