Police beat HDP's Ay at families sit-in in front of Gebze jail

HDP Gebze district co-chair Idris Ay was beaten and detained during the peaceful protest of families of prisoners on hunger strike in front of Gebze prison.

The families of the political prisoners who are on hunger strike demanding the end of isolation against Öcalan were again subjected to police violence in front of Gebze Prison. 

On the 23rd day of their peaceful sit-in in front of Gebze Prison, the families of the prisoners on hunger strike were harassed by police. 

The families who were systematically blocked and attacked every day met in Gebze early in the morning before joining the Workers’ Day demonstration.

The police, who blockade the families, said the action was forbidden and would not allow it. The families who reacted to the police saying they will not be moved, began their sit-in. 

Police then attacked the families, dragging mothers and beating relatives of the prisoners. HDP Gebze district co-chair Idris Ay, who had joined the demonstration, was beaten and detained by police. He was released shortly after.

The families left the prison on Thursday to attend the May 1 rally in Bakirkoy, stating that they would resume their actions on Thursday.

In the meantime, the photos and images taken by press members were also seized and deleted by the police. The images on the phones of the families who recorded the events were also deleted by police who confiscated the mobile phones.
