HDP councilors left out of seized muncipalities meetings

HDP members of the seized municipalities of Sur, Cizre and Idil, were prevented from attending council meetings.

Following the detention of the co-mayors of Sur Municipality Filiz Buluttekin and Cemal Özdemir on 21 December 2019, the municipality was seized and Sur District Governor Abdullah Çiftçi was appointed trustee.

HDP councilors of Sur Municipality went to the town hall today to attend the January council meeting.

After passing the security control and entering the building the councilors were made to wait before being handed over a letter dated 21 December.

The letter, signed by the trustee, said that "Municipal Assembly, Council and Commissions duties and powers mentioned within the scope of the relevant article will be carried out by the members of the Council".

It was learned that the application does not correspond to the law.

HDP councilors in Cizre and Idil prevented from attending council meeting

The HDP councilors of the seized municipalities of Cizre and Idil also wanted to attend the regular council meetings. The council members went to the town hall and were faced with a police barrier in both distrists of Şırnak.

In Cizre, councilors were blocked by police at the entrance to the town hall. Police and councilors argued as police said they would not allow the HDP member in the premises.

The same problems were experienced by HDP councilors in Idil. The police said there had been no notification of the meeting and that there was no meeting in the municipality.
