HPG Erdal assessed current situation in Kurdistan

In an interview to Yeni Özgür Politika paper about the recent military operations and clashes, People’s Defense Forces (HPG) commander Dr. Bahoz Erdal stated that in the last three weeks, 169 Turkish soldiers were killed and three Skorsky helicopters were shot down by HPG forces in the clashes in Þemdinli area.

Bahoz said that Turkish security forces in the region of Þemdinli have been forced to withdraw in their bases.

Asked about the recent strategy change of HPG forces, Erdal remarked that HPG forces have recently switch to a "area-control" strategy. This strategy of taking control over an area and limiting the war to that area has been witnessed in Þemdinli and Çukurca. Erdal said the current situation in the region can be seen as a medium intensity war, not a low intensity conflict. Erdal noted that the actions carried out by Kurdistan Freedom Movement were directly related to the "state terror implemented by the ruling AKP government".

Erdal pointed out that “The revolutionary operation Kurdish guerrillas have carried out in Þemdinli has once again revealed the fact that the borders in Kurdistan region are becoming meaningless and illegitimate.”

Referring to the lack of any detailed statement by the Turkish army as to the events in Þemdinli, Erdal said that the Turkish government is insisting on hiding the violence used in Kurdistan and the failure of this repression policy.

Erdal said that eleven HPG guerrillas lost their life in Þemdinli operation and underlined that the Prime Minister and Interior Minister’s claims about the death of 115 HPG members are groundless.

Erdal also mentioned Turkish officials’ linking the HPG activity in Þemdinli to the Baath regime in Syria and said that “The Turkish government is trying to show the Kurdish movement as a target by linking it to the Baath regime and it aims to find excuses for its failure against the guerrillas.”
