Human Rights Day in Roboski

Human Rights Day in Roboski

Roboski families have called on organisations to visit Roboski on Human Rights Day.

The families on 34 Kurds massacred by Turkish war planes on 28 December 2011 met at the cemetery for their 'Thursday Assessment' on the 101st week since the attack.

Veli Encü read a statement in the pouring rain on behalf of the families, who wore black and carried photographs of their loved ones.

Encü recalled that 708 days had passed since the incident, and that instead of trying the culprits, the state was continuing to punish the grieving. Veli Encü said they would not allow a 'security road' or 'barbed wire' to be constructed at the Roboski border, adding: "On the occasion of Human Rights Day, 10 December, we would like to invite bar associations, first and foremost the Diyarbakır Bar, and civil society organisations to attend the programme on that day in Roboski, where the gravest violation of human rights took place."

Veli Encü, who was due to appear in court today, said that he would not answer any questions as long as those responsible for the 34 deaths were not revealed.
