A Human Rights School has been opened by the Bar Association of Batman and named after lawyer Sedat Özevin, human rights defender and former chair of Batman Bar Association, who lost his life in a mine explosion on Hasankeyf road in 2010.
The school has left three weeks behind, giving lessons on “human rights and the ECHR”, “meetings and demonstrations”, “prison problems”, “prevention of torture and ill treatment”, “human rights theory and history”, “freedom of thought and faith” and “women's rights”.
Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK) central executive board member Ayhan Bilgen, who gave a seminar on “freedom of thought and faith” called attention to the importance of the religion and faith in the struggle for rights. Bilgen stated that the freedom of religion and faith remained at a critical point in Turkey.
