Hundreds of people gathered in Trafalgar Square to attend a commemoration for the victims of the earthquake in Kurdistan, Turkey and Syria. The commemoration was organized by the British Democratic Power Union (DGB).
A two-minute silence was held for those who lost their lives in the earthquake. Candles were lit around the banners with the names of the cities where the earthquake took place.
Oktay Şahbaz and Apo Toprak read the statement on behalf of the DGB and underlined that Erdoğan and his government did not help the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their houses and their relatives.
'Erdoğan is responsible for the disaster’
The statement said that the Erdoğan regime blocked and confiscated aid. “The families of those who lost their lives, the working class, students and many more, we will not accept what happened. We will not let this happen to us again. Erdoğan is responsible for this disaster. It's not God or destiny. It is time to put an end to the disaster, destruction and nightmare that has been going on for 22 years.”
Hackney mayor, Philip Glanville, emphasized the importance of 'solidarity' and struggle. Türkan Budak from the Kurdish People's Assembly, on the other hand, pointed out that the Turkish state follows a policy of displacing Kurdish Alevis even in this time. We will grow in solidarity, we will not leave our lands."
