Hunger strikers in prison: We'll take back what they took from us
In Turkey and Kurdistan prisoners have gone on indefinite hunger strike on 1 March. Over 7,000 prisoners are fasting and they are suffering continue harassment and attacks.
The hunger strike resistance demanding the end of isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan was launched by DTK co-chair and HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven.
The resistance was joined by thousands of prisoners and activists in Europe, Kurdistan, Turkey and Canada.
Among the prisoners on hunger strike is Kibriye Evren. She is a journalist. She was arrested on 9 September 2018.
Evren is imprisoned in Diyarbakır E Type Prison. She went on hunger strike on 16 December 2018.
Another prisoner on hunger strike is Menal Temel. She is 24 years old and from Mardin, Qoser. She comes from a family of nine. She was taken into custody in 2016. She was sentenced to nine
years in prison based on the charges of membership to a terrorist organisation. She is imprisoned in Tarsus Prison.
She went on hunger strike on 16 December 2018. In her message she said: “My biggest dream is to be free in the country. Hope is more important than victory. We shall always preserve our hope Hunger strikes are actions to retake what has been taken from us, raise our voice”.
