An international campaign has been launched for peace and the recognition of the right to conscientious objection in Turkey.
The campaign which has been launched on Avaaz.org points out that “Among 47 countries which are members of the Council of Europe Turkey is one of the only 2 countries with Azerbaijan which do not recognise conscientious objection; and the only one in EU for which Turkey is a candidate and for which it is a criteria of membership; where the state is regularly taken to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for violations of the 9th article of the European Convention of Human Rights.”
The text of the campaign remarks that “Moreover, the 318th article of the Turkish Penal Code within the framework of the “anti-terror struggle” punishes conscientious objectors for 2 years in jail, twice in the case of press statements made by the conscientious objectors”.
Besides the removal of a Turkish law which rules that Turkish female citizen can be mobilized anytime in case of armed conflict, the campaign also demands the establishment of a true culture of peace to end a civil war which made 60,000 dead in the 2 camps in 30 years.
Avaaz—meaning "voice" in several European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages—was launched in 2007 with a simple democratic mission: to organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world they have and the world most people everywhere want.
The Avaaz community campaigns in 15 languages, served by a core team on 6 continents and thousands of volunteers. The transnational community takes action to ensure that the views and values of the world's people inform the decisions that affect everyone.
