Iraq: Preparations complete for the Tal Afar operation

The operation to liberate Tal Afar where Kurds, Turkmens and Arabs live is reported to be ready to go. Preparations have been completed.

The Iraqi Defense Ministry has announced that preparations for the operation on ISIS invaded Tal Afar have been completed.

An operation on Tal Afar entered the conversation after the Iraqi army forces took Mosul under control completely, and the Defense Ministry announced that the Hashd al-Shaabi militia will also be joining the operation, while Iraqi air forces will provide aerial support.

The Hashd al-Shaabi militia had announced on August 3 that they were launching an operation to clear the villages of the Tal Afar district, 63 km to the west from Mosul.

Tal Afar is the largest district in Mosul, with an Êzidî Kurdish and Shia and Sunni Turkmen and Arab population. The district had been invaded by ISIS on June 16, 2014.
