Iraqi MP calls for an investigation into MIT's visit to Baghdad

Iraqi parliamentarian Arif Humami requested an investigation into recent meetings between Turkish intelligence service (MIT) Undersecretary Hakan Fidan and senior Iraqi officials in Baghdad.

During a visit to Baghdad on September 11, Turkish intelligence service MIT’s Undersecretary Hakan Fidan met with Sunni political leader Hamis Hancar, President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi. The visit was open to the press, yet no official statement was issued about the content of the talks.

Reacting to the visit, Iraqi Parliamentarian Arif Humami said, “Hakan Fidan was supposed to meet with the intelligence agencies of Iraq. He cannot meet with political officials because he has no political representation.”

According to RojNews, Humami designated Fidan's meeting with Sunni Sovereignty Coalition leader Hamis Hançer as a "spying" activity. “The Iraqi government is so weak that the Turkish state is openly engaged in intelligence activities in Iraq. The government cannot do anything against it,” he added.

The Iraqi parliamentarian called for an official investigation into Fidan's talks in Iraq.
