Iraqi President Barham Salih has appointed Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi, the former communications minister, as the country's new prime minister.

The former Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi announced his resignation on December 1st following massive protests in the country.

Allawi must form a new government within a month to run the country until early elections can be held.
