Police forces heavily deployed across Istanbul to prevent events to mark the May Day around Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue have attacked and detained dozens trying to reach the symbolic square which is not hosting the massive May 1 rally this year.
According to figures announced by May 1 Law organisation, 52 people have been detained while tryig to reach the Taksim Square for to mark the International Workers' Day.
In the meantime, one person got injured after being hit by a tear gas fired by police in the eye while heading from Mecidiyeköy towards Taksim.
In another development, police attacked the crowd from Mücadele Birliği (Struggle Union), BDSP, SODAP and Dev-Tekstil Union members who wanted to make a statement to the press on Talimhane Street. Police disallowed the press release and assaulted the mass. 5 people were heavily battered and taken into custody.
