Izmir earthquake leaves at least 24 dead, 743 injured

The number of people who lost their lives in the 6.9-magnitude earthquake in Izmir increased to 24, while the aftershocks continue.

Authorities stated that the number of people who lost their lives as a result of the earthquake experienced on Friday in Izmir rose to 24.

A total of 804 people were injured, 743 in Izmir, 5 in Manisa, 2 in Balıkesir and 54 in Aydın.

It was noted that the search and rescue efforts were completed in 8 of the 17 buildings destroyed in Izmir, while the work in the remaining 9 buildings continues.

The search and rescue teams working in the Yılmaz Erbek Apartment, which collapsed in the lower two floors where a market was located, reached Gülçin Aykut Soydan. Soydan, said to be 35, was taken on a stretcher to Ege University Hospital.

On the other hand, Afyon, Bursa, Sakarya Kütahya, Eskişehir, Çanakkale, Muğla and Balıkesir, Manisa, Konya, Denizli and Uşak Provincial AFAD Directorates were dispatched to the region.

In the statement made by AFAD, it was also stated that 341 aftershocks, 31 of which were over 4, were experienced as of 4 am after the main earthquake.
