Kasım Fırat: Time for an honorable peace

Kasım Fırat, evaluating Abdullah Öcalan's call, stated that the Kurdish people have paid a heavy price and now demand an honorable peace and a fitting agreement.

Kasım Fırat, President of the Sheikh Said Association, assessed the discussions sparked by Abdullah Öcalan's call for "Peace and a Democratic Society" and said that all segments of the Kurdish people should support this process. Fırat emphasized the importance of standing behind those leading the efforts and stated, "The Kurdish side is now fully aware of this matter; they have waged their struggle and possess the knowledge, experience, and capability to conduct negotiations. Therefore, all Kurdish organizations, spheres of struggle, and all dynamics of our people must stand by this honorable stance."

Killing and denial will not solve this issue

Fırat said that the Kurdish people are going through a highly sensitive period, adding: "For more than a century, the Kurdish people have waged an honorable resistance, paid a heavy price, and lost their loved ones. Despite these harsh conditions, our people continue to stand strong. Through their resistance, they have earned a dignified stance, refusing to retreat and firmly holding on to their identity and sense of belonging. Today, the world also recognizes this reality. Killing, denial, and annihilation will no longer resolve this issue. At this stage, the establishment of rights, justice, and peace has become a necessity. The world today demands this, and so do the Kurdish people."

The Kurdish people have a legitimate struggle and rightful demands

Fırat emphasized that those addressing the Kurdish people must approach this process with reason and foresight, pointing out that the global landscape has evolved toward resolving this issue. He stated, "The world is now saying: ‘Come together, talk, and find a solution.’ A shared life can only be built upon the foundations of justice and peace. We have now reached this point."

Continuing his remarks, Fırat added, "This process must be carried out with prudence, strategic thinking, and an awareness of global dynamics. The Kurdish people are an ancient people and the true owners of these lands; their struggle is legitimate, and their demands are justified. However, today, this alone is not enough. The forces and structures opposing the Kurdish people must also be taken into account. We must adopt a realistic, prudent, and determined stance in this process."

A peace based on justice and law

Today, people are coming together for peace. Both the Kurds and their counterparts must embrace this process and navigate it with wisdom and responsibility. This path must be pursued in a fair and balanced manner.

Allah Almighty states in Surah Al-Hujurat, Verse 9: "If two groups among the believers fight, make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight against the oppressor until they comply with justice and make peace fairly." We act according to this principle. We must both participate in this process and stand firmly for peace. However, this peace must be built on the foundations of rights, justice, and the rule of law. For a century, the rights of our nation have been denied. This injustice must now be rectified. No one should overlook the dignity of the Kurdish people. The entire Kurdish society, with all its dynamics, must take part in this process, ensuring that the peace process is established on an honorable and just foundation for the Kurds.

The Kurdish side has the experience to lead these negotiations

Some circles are approaching this process with unease and impatience; this attitude is not the right one. The Kurdish people must remain patient. It must not be forgotten that Kurds have a long history of struggle and a strong memory of resistance. Today, those sitting at the negotiation table on behalf of the Kurds have the awareness and experience to defend Kurdish rights. We must all stand by this process. The Kurdish side is fully aware of the matter; they have waged their struggle and possess the knowledge, expertise, and capacity to conduct negotiations. Kurdish political formations, social institutions, all fields of struggle, and every political dynamic of our people must stand by this honorable stance. The Kurdish people have paid a heavy price. Today, they demand the honorable peace they deserve, their rights, and an agreement worthy of their century-long resistance. We support this process and call on our people to follow it with patience and perseverance.

On this occasion, I would also like to emphasize that we do not accept the speculations being spread in the media regarding Rojava. The achievements of Rojava are the collective achievements of the Kurdish people, and this issue must be resolved within its own framework and within the state it belongs to; it is not a matter to be decided elsewhere. Opening these achievements to debate or bringing them up in a provocative manner is not the right approach. We also find it inappropriate to question the gains that the Kurdish people have achieved through sacrifice. This process must be carried out with the collective wisdom and will of all Kurds, and peace must be crowned with honor."
