The Ecology Committee of the KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) expressed its position on the upcoming elections in Turkey.
The KCK said that the neo-liberal economic policy of the AKP-MHP abandoned entire regions to devastation. To pave the way to social ecology, the KCK called on all voters to choose the Green Left Party.
The KCK statement said: “As the election campaign takes place, the ecological destruction in Turkey and Kurdistan continues. The AKP-MHP fascism has given the energy and construction companies access to natural habitats and is intensifying the plundering and overexploitation of nature. After the 6 February earthquake, mountains of rubble were dumped into the environment. The AKP-MHP fascism is also trying to finance the war in Kurdistan and its election budget by plundering nature. From the Cûdî to the Ida Mountains, from Ikizdere to Akkuyu, the whole region is subjected to the greed of the energy and construction companies.”
The Ecology Committee further said: “While the aftermath of the Hiroshima and Chernobyl disasters and mass murders are still fresh, the AKP-MHP fascism, with the sole support of Putin, is building a nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, despite the stubborn resistance of the environmental and environmentalist movement in the region. This paves the way for a second Chernobyl. Both scientists and the environmental movement warn against the construction of a nuclear plant and repeatedly emphasize that the soil there is in constant motion. Those who point to the dangers of building the Akkuyu nuclear power plant are only stating the obvious.”
The statement continued: “The AKP-MHP fascist alliance, despite having intensified its genocidal war against the Kurdish people, is facing defeat as it has not been able to achieve the desired goal thanks to the guerrillas' resistance. It wants to continue the war and destroy the environment of the whole country by continuing the war. Alleged development projects such as the solar energy systems in Northern Kurdistan are only for profit and are destroying agriculture and animal husbandry.
This was recognized at the conference of the ecological movement in Istanbul on 21 January 2023, and a common ecological position in the elections was agreed. In the face of rampant destruction of nature, it is now time to put our stance into practice in the elections.
It is time that we put our stance in the elections in the spirit of democracy, ecology and women's freedom.
It is time to show the free will and the democratic culture of our peoples at the ballot box against the fascist, despotic regime that mercilessly exploits nature and people, fuels racism, nationalism and mafia structures and wants to secure its own existence by repressing society.
It is time that we protected the right of all living beings to their habitat, to a home and to live freely in a free environment and to increase resistance at the ballot box against everything that is contrary to human society.
It is high time to show we want respect for the soil people walk on, for the water they drink, for the air they breathe.
It is time to take a stand for ecological villages against the pollution of the cities, for communes, against the plundering of the land for profit, for cooperatives based on their own productive power against monopolies.
It is time to show the fight for social ecology and against capitalist modernity and its monopolistic form and our perspective of a democratic environment.
For all the above, we call on people to vote for the Green Left Party.”
