KON-MED calls on activists to take to the streets for Abdullah Öcalan

The Kurdish umbrella organization KON-MED has called on activists to take to the streets to demand news about the situation of Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The Kurdish people’s leader, Abdullah Öcalan, has been in total isolation for 20 months. Since then, there has been no news about his health and condition. Even a visit by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) did not bring any certainty about Öcalan's situation. As reported by the Asrin Law Office, the CPT did not meet with Öcalan in Imrali. Therefore, the largest Kurdish umbrella organization in Germany, KON-MED, is calling for a protest.

The appeal describes Öcalan's 23-year isolation as "an attack on the free life of peoples". Because Öcalan's philosophy not only shaped the Kurdish struggle for freedom, but is now an inspiration worldwide for an alternative to capitalist modernity. KON-MED announced that it will continue the fight for Öcalan's freedom.

The statement said: “There has been no news from Rêber Apo [Abdullah Öcalan] for 20 months. Our concern for Rêber Apo's situation and health is growing. The CPT must immediately fulfill its duty to put an end to this inhumane practice. Rêber Apo's health and life must be guaranteed. The CPT does not provide any information on this subject. During the CPT's last visit to Imrali, the CPT was not even able to speak to Rêber Apo. The lawyers' questions about Öcalan's situation also remained unanswered.”

KON-MED asked the CPT why the meeting with Öcalan could not take place and why it did not provide any explanation. The umbrella organization called for an urgent statement from the CPT.

KON-MED said: “We call in particular on the Federal Government, the CPT, the Council of Europe and all international organizations to take urgent measures and appeal to the people of Kurdistan and the public to take to the streets.

Therefore, we call on all our people, our friends and everyone whose heart beats for the values of freedom, to unite around Rêber Apo and take unceasing actions wherever they are.”
