Kurdish MPs in Baghdad headed to court

The file on Kurdish MPs in the Iraqi Parliament has been completed by the Commission of Parliamentary Inquiries and submitted to court.

Iraqi central government has completed the file they had been working on against Kurdish MPs for voting in the referendum held in Southern Kurdistan on September 25. The Commission of Parliamentary Inquiries has prepared a file that will allow the Kurdish MPs to be put on trial and has submitted it to court. With this submission, the MPs can now be tried.

ZEYDİ: THE COURT’S VERDICT WILL BE IN FORCE

Commission of Parliamentary Inquiries Chairperson Kamil Zeydi spoke about the file and said: “There is nothing in there regarding the annulment of the trial of MPs who participated in the referendum.”

Zeydi stated that they have detected violations in the investigation they conducted and said, “We have detected violations and submitted the file to the court for a verdict. The courts will decide.”

Zeydi said the file that leads the way for trials and the lifting of immunities are two different things, and added that even if the MPs’ immunities are not lifted, the court’s verdict will be in force.

Zeydi said, “The MPs’ immunities end at the end of their term. The Parliamentary Chair could pass the lifting of immunities in the parliament without a vote too.”

HARB: THE RELATIONSHIP IS STARTING TO IMPROVE

Constitution expert Tarik Harb stated that the relationship has started to improve after the Federal Court annulled the referendum and added that the issue can be resolved in some way.

Harb also commented on the file that leads the way to the MPs’ trial being submitted to the court and stated that not all files submitted to the courts have to be processed and that his observation is that the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad is starting to improve.
