Kurds in Geneva vigil call on the UN to act

Kurdish activists have once again marched in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva, demanding support for political prisoners in Turkey and the fight against Erdogan's dictatorship.

The vigil in front of the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva in support of the demands of political prisoners in Turkey continues and has been taken over by members of the Kurdish People's Council of Zurich on Wednesday.

Since November 27, political prisoners have been resisting the isolation of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on the prison island of Imrali and the total disenfranchisement in Turkish prisons with a hunger strike. With the vigil organized by the umbrella organization of democratic Kurdish associations in Switzerland (CDK-S) in the framework of the KCK campaign "End isolation, fascism and occupation - time for freedom", solidarity with the hunger-striking prisoners is demanded. The UN is called to take active action against the injustice in the prisons of the Turkish regime.

Today's vigil was opened with a minute's silence in memory of those killed in the Kurdish liberation struggle. Afterwards, Geneva CDK Chairman Salih Sağlam said in a speech that the struggle against the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan and the action in support of the prison resistance will continue.

Cahit Uçar, one of the activists who traveled from Zurich, told ANF, "The UN and the EU boast about democracy and human rights, but they ignore the demands of forty million Kurds. In the face of the resisting Kurdish people, they close their mouth, eye and ear and play the three monkeys." Abdullah Ocalan has been in captivity of a fascist and dictatorial system for almost 22 years, he said, adding that the Kurdish people are thus forced to surrender. "The UN must fulfill its mission regarding democracy and human rights and respond to the just struggle of the Kurdish people against the Erdogan dictatorship," the activist demanded.

Actions will be continued

In addition to the vigil in Geneva, the letter writing campaign to the UN will continues in Switzerland. Numerous other actions are planned in the coming days. This was announced by Songül Aslan, co-chair of the Kurdish Society Center in Switzerland, in a speech.

On February 6, a demonstration will take place in Lucerne at 2:30 pm. Long marches in Basel and Solothurn have been announced for February 10 and 11, and a rally is to be held again in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva on February 13.
