Kurds to go to Geneva II together

Talks have resumed in Hewler between the Rojava People's Assembly and the Syrian Kurdish National Council (SKNC) after a long interval. At the end of the 16-hour session the two sides reached agreement on the subject of the two assemblies attending Geneva II together, but were unable to reach agreement on other contentious issues.

Talks between the Rojava People's Assembly and the Syrian Kurdish National Council (SKNC), that constitute the Kurdish Supreme Council, had been severed on account of various problems. The subjects discussed on the first day included joint attendance at Geneva II, the transitional administration proclaimed in Rojava, the opening of the Semalka border crossing, the release of certain detainees, mainly members of El Parti and Parti Azadi, and the investigation of certain incidents.

It was agreed on principle that the Rojava People's Assembly and the SKNC should attend Geneva II together as an independent delegation, but in the event of this not being accepted by international powers, to go as part of the Syrian opposition. It was also agreed to establish a commission to examine certain incidents that have taken place in Rojava.

The detention by public order authorities in Rojava of certain persons, mainly members of El Parti and Parti Azadi, was also discussed. While the SKNC made the release of these persons a condition for the resumption of normal relations between the sides the Rojava People's Assembly called for an investigation into who led attacks and acted as guides for Islamist parties that carried out assaults on Kurds in Til Aran, Til Hasil, Aleppo, Afrin and other places. Members of the Rojava People's Assembly emphasised that the release of these persons was a matter of law and order and not a political decision, after which no agreement was reached.

It is reported that the opening of the Semalka border crossing, one of the most important issues between South Kurdistan and Rojava, was also discussed, but agreement could not be reached between the Rojava People's Assembly and the Federal Kurdistan Regional authorities on the acceptance of conditions put forward by the SKNC.

Another subject discussed was the participation of the SKNC in the recently proclaimed Transitional Administration in Rojava, but consensus could not be reached.
Talks between the two sides resumed at 10 am this morning.
