People are born, they grow, live and die ... The important thing is not to live long, but to do many things within the living period…”
39 years have passed since the Turkish state didn’t hesitate in executing three young revolutionary leaders Deniz Gezmis, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin Inan with an intention to destroy them and their ‘dangerous and threatening’ ideas. They, however, never died but became the most respected and prouded names of the Turkish revolutionary movement.
The struggle they gave continues to be example to those following their path. Despite the government’s efforts to erase their names from the memories, they are remembered with respect each year at the day of their death.
As in many other cities, the names were commemorated with a three-day activity program this year in Mersin which was organized by the Association of 68’s at the 68’s Forest of Peace and Brotherhood. As well as hundreds of citizens, politicians, writers, artists and officials demanding justice, peace and democracy, the activity was attended by Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block’s Mersin Independent Candidate Ertugrul Kürkcü and about fifty symbol politic names of the 68 Generation including Oðuzhan Müftüoðlu, Ali Açan, Hilmi Yüncü, Aþkýn Kocaçimen, Sezai Sarýoðlu, Melek Ulagay, Ömer Özdal, Zerruh Vakýf Ahmetoðlu, Ýlkay Demir, Necmi Demir,Mustafa Baykara, Þaban Ýba, Mustafa Kaçaroðlu, Emin Özüdoðru, Bahatin Günel, Mehmet Çevik, Salman Kaya, Selahattin Güleç, Osman Cavit Ýyigün, Mustafa Alabora who came to Mersin to give support for Kürkcü.
Following the planting of three saplings on behalf of Deniz Gezmis, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin Inan, the remembrance program began with the placement of a wreath on the monument of three leaders and continued with one minute's silence.
Dominated by the great revolutionary spirit of those fighting for freedom of the country and the peoples, the remembrance activity continued with the speeches of notable names, music performances and the free-forum where citizens take the stage and express their thoughts, demands and feelings.
KAPKIRAN: THIS CASE WILL NOT END
Making the opening speech, President of Mersin Association of 68’s, Hasan Kapýkýran said the followings; "Just 39 years ago, three young people were sentenced to execution because of political ideas. The three prominent representatives of the 68 Generation were also the prominent leaders of the student movement against the intense class war in our country in the 60’s. This case will continue to be the festering case of our late political history”.
KURKCU: REVOLUTIONARY WAVE BUSHING OUT WITHIN THE KURDISH FREEDOM MOVEMENT
Mersin Independent Candidate Ertugrul Kürkcü began his speech with a special thanks to Mersin for having the only forest in the name of the 68 generation. Noting that the brotherhood of the peoples is the heritage of Deniz’s, Kürkçü spoke as follows; “At the first glance, we seemed to have lost because our friends had lost their lives, the organizations seemed to separate from each other. However, this lost like a pine cone which exploses and scatters its seeds around. From 1974 till 1980, the Revolutionary Movement of Turkey didn’t remain as just a thought and the actions of heroes alone; it was crowned with a great revolutionary uprising endowed with the actions of hundreds of thousands namelesses. Today, this uprising continues at another time, in another place. This wave, which appears to be quietened down at the west of Turkey, is greening again at the east within the Kurdish people's struggle for freedom. 30 years after the beginning of this struggle, with a greater power, the Kurdish freedom movement is now expressing its devotedness to Deniz Gezmiþ, Mahir Çayan and Ibrahim Kaypakkaya and their ideas. It is today opening us the door of a new alliance with us. This is a strategic connection and this connection is the reconstruction of the companion between the Kurdish freedom movement and the Turkish socialist movement. Today, we better comprehend the prohibition on Deniz’s words at Ankara Central Closed Prison’s garden, 'Long live the Brotherhood of the Turkish and Kurdish Peoples' ”.
Kürkcü’s speech was followed with other speeches, poems and torch songs of the guests and citizens with the common ground and message that the peoples of Turkey must come together and give a common struggle against the system to gain freedom, democracy and peace. People expressed that Kürkcü is a great chance for Mersin and that they will send him to the parliament to represent all victims, sufferers, strugglers and seekers of peace, democracy and labor.
The activities ended with the music performances of Group Düþev, Group MKM and Group Bajar who sang Turkish, Kurdish and Armenian songs for the martyrs of this struggle and for the brotherhood of the peoples.
