Kürkçü: Roboski Massacre jointly organized by the Government and Chief of Defence

Perpetrators of the Roboski Massacre are yet to be brought to justice as almost a year has passed since the incident in which 34 Kurdish civilians,among whom 19 were children, were bombed by Turkish warplanes on 28 December 2011. The trial of those responsible hasn't started in the last eleven months as the state claims that perpetrators couldn't be ascertained yet. Kurds and democratic circles on the other hand point the state as the perpetrator of the massacre.

Public opinion is also denied the right to obtain information about the legal process because of the 'confidentiality verdict' imposed on the investigation. Families of victims, in response to their demand for justice, have however been provided with compensation which they are still refusing to receive, saying they will not accept the money paid for the murder of their children.

In an interview to ANF about the Roboski Massacre, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy Ertuðrul Kürkçü, also a member of the Uludere Sub-Commisson affilated to the Parliamentary Human Rights Commission, evaluated the one-year process as a period of "uselessly wasted time". Kürkçü criticized the Parliamentary Commission for making no headway within this eleven-months process; "The Human Rights Commission contended itself with the information provided by official authorities such as the General Staff, Ministry of the Interior and Specially Authorized Prosecution Office of Diyarbakýr High Criminal Court. The commisson took no other steps, did no researches nor tried to overcome the obstacles".

Kürkçü noted that the General Staff and Ministry of the Interior have so far provided no concrete reports to shed some light on the massacre, adding; "These authorities have furthermore hidden some significant information on the essence of the incident, its political purpose, the intelligence service it grounded on and the decision making mechanism. The Interior MÝnistry launched an investigation together with local military units and released a confidential report which was sent to different units including the Parliamentary Commission. The report by the Ministry however reveals no information as to the reason and consequences of the incident. The only point new in the report says that military units didn't leave their posts and that they made no attempts to save the people".

Referring to the report the Prosecution Office of Diyarbakýr submitted to the Commission, Kürkçü said that this report didn't consist of any details other than those mentioned in the report by the General Staff.

In this respect, we have received the most significant information from the people in the village of Roboski despite all efforts government authorities made to cover up the massacre. People's testimony was the only source of information and facts", Kürkçü underlined and expressed his personal opinion on the incident as follows;

"I see the Roboski Massacre as a cross-border operation which was carried out on the basis of the authorization that the parliament had granted to the government for cross-border operations and deployment of Turkish soldiers across its borders. The Chief of Defence should be seen as the decision maker working in cooperation with the political authority because a consensus was to be reached between both sides in launching and ending cross-border operations at those times when the incident took place".

Kürkçü underlined both the Turkish government and Chief of Defence should be taken to court for jointly organizing and carrying out the operation. BDP deputy noted that the attemps to cover up the massacre are the most evident indication that these high authorities are the perpetrators of the massacre.

Kürkçü also pointed out that "No step has been taken to take the actually known but not disclosed perpetratos to account because of the majority of AKP members in the Parliamentary Commission who have overtaken the responsibility to cover up this incident".

Referring to the stance and struggle of Roboski families, Kürkçü said that;" They have displayed a noble stance by refusing to take the money paid with an aim to keep them silent. Regardless of all the oppression and imprisonment they faced after losing their children in the massacre, they have furthermore been despised for refusing to remain silent".
