Kurtulmuş: A new process has begun, and responsibility lies with Parliament now

Following talks with MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli on the current process, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş announced that responsibility now lies with Parliament.

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş and MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli held a 25-minute meeting at the Parliament on Wednesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Kurtulmuş said that “a new process has begun in Turkey,” particularly in light of Abdullah Öcalan’s February 27 ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ and the PKK's decision to disband and disarm, announced on May 12.

Kurtulmuş added, “From now on, it is the duty of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to ensure that this process reaches its conclusion in a transparent manner, before the eyes of our nation, and in accordance with the plan.”

Regarding the steps that need to be taken in Parliament, Kurtulmuş stated the following: "A commission comprising representatives of all political parties in Parliament must be established to monitor, control, and lead the process. Through this process, we have refreshed our ideas mutually. I hope that the upcoming process will also be concluded in the best possible way, with Parliament fulfilling its historic responsibility. At a time when the region is undergoing such major changes, Turkey has been presented with a historic opportunity. This opportunity requires responsibility that transcends politics. This is not a political process that any political party or faction can initiate or carry out on its own. Nor is it a matter of give and take. It is about voluntarily establishing unity and brotherhood. I hope that everyone will step up and fulfill their responsibilities, and this issue will be fully resolved through negotiations under the supervision of Parliament. At this point, the responsibility lies with Parliament. I invite political parties to join in this responsibility.”

Kurtulmuş added that the details of how the work will be carried out in Parliament will be clarified and shared with the public. Asked whether the commission will be established before Parliament goes into recess, he answered, “as soon as possible.”
