LAB: Freedom of Abdullah Öcalan is key to finding a democratic solution to the Kudish question

Basque trade union LAB said in a message that “the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan is key to finding a democratic solution to the Kurdish question.”

Basque trade union LAB released a video message with its members and executives on the anniversary of the international conspiracy that resulted in the abduction of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan in February 1999.

LAB members and executives, who have joined from the beginning the global “Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan” initiative, every year organize different activities and actions for the Kurdish people and its leader.

Speaking on behalf of LAB, International Relations Spokesperson Koldo Saenz said: "Today is the anniversary of the start of the international conspiracy operation against Abdullah Öcalan. Despite more than 26 years having passed since the operation, Öcalan is still being held in prison in Imrali under inhumane conditions, without communication with the outside world. There is no information about his condition, and we don’t know whether he is alive or not.

LAB demands his freedom. We do so for two reasons: because his detention is a serious human rights violation and because Öcalan's freedom is key to the democratic solution of the Kurdish question. Therefore, we demand Öcalan's release and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue." On 15 February 2023, LAB organized the press conference held within the scope of the campaign to free Abdullah Öcalan, together with 6 unions in the Basque Country.
