Lawyers demanded release of jailed colleagues

Thousands of lawyers from 57 bar associations have demanded the closure of Specially Authorized Courts and condemned the governmental intervention in justice. The lawyers demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners, and in particular their jailed colleagues.

Speaking at the demonstration, Ýzmir Bar Association President Sema Pekdaþ has said, “The Specially Authorized Courts prevent defense. They serve as the ideological appratus of the state with privacy decisions. We, the lawyers, are unable to practice our profession. This means that this is not a state of law.”

Ýstanbul Bar Association President Ümit Kocasakal has noted, “These courts are the domains of power of the government. None of us is safe until these courts are closed. We, the lawyers, will always defend the right to defense.”
