Lawyers protest against police violence

Lawyers at Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul have once again gathered on Wednesday to protest the use of excessive police force against protestors at Taksim Square and lawyers inside the courthouse on Tuesday.

Lawyers in the courthouse protested the police attack against protestors in Taksim Square early Tuesday morning. Forcibly entering inside, riot police attacked lawyers and took 47 into custody during their protest. Lawyers were released later.

Special operation police teams have once again surrounded the courthouse today, not allowing people enter inside except for the courthouse staff.

The main slogans lawyers chanted during the protest were "Taksim everywhere, resistance everywhere" and "shoulder to shoulder against fascism.

Some two thousand lawyers also took to the steets in capital Ankara and marched to the central Kızılay Square, closing the way to traffic at Atatürk Boulevard. The lawyers were joined by more people during their march to the square where thousands of people have gathered in the afternoon.

Speaking today, Ankara Bar Association President Sema Aksoy said that 1088 people were wounded as a result of police violence against protestors in the capital. Aksoy remarked that of 20 people who suffered head trauma two were in critical situation.

According to Aksoy, more than 700 people were taken into custody in the capital city, and among them 11 are still being remanded in custody. Aksoy said 66 high school students were among those detained.
