Lectures and actions on the ban of the PKK in Germany continue

The nationwide series of lectures on the ban of the PKK in Germany continues. Numerous other events have been announced for the next ten days, followed by a demonstration and a specialist conference in Berlin.

A series of events has been taking place for a month to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the ban of the PKK in Germany.

The events are part of the campaign to lift the ban. Last week lectures were held in Frankfurt am Main, Halle, Landshut, Ingolstadt and Gottingen. With the series of lectures, the campaign aims to shed light on the origins of the ban of the PKK and German-Turkish relations on the one hand, and on the other hand, to draw attention to the democratic deficit that exists as a result of the ban.

It was pointed out at the events that Kurds are under general suspicion in Germany and that organized activities such as cultural events, fundraising or demonstrations are criminalized in advance.

In the context of criminalization, paragraph 129b of the Criminal Code was also examined in the lectures. This paragraph punishes membership in a criminal or terrorist organization abroad and has led to Kurdish activists being sentenced to up to five years in prison over the past ten years, without those affected being charged with specific individual crimes.

In the discussion following a lecture in Gottingen, the criminalization of the Kurdish community was analyzed and placed in the context of the planned tightening of asylum laws and the reform of the naturalization law.
