Lisbon in solidarity with Rojava against Turkish invasion

Actions to defend northern and eastern Syria from the genocidal invasion of the Turkish State continue all around the world.

Dozens of people gathered at the Principe Real Garden in Lisbon, Portugal and marched through the city center to Rossio Square in protest at the Turkish incursion into northern Syria.

Banners, flags and slogans of internationalist solidarity against Erdogan's dirty war, against fascism, for the life and freedom of the peoples of Rojava, occupied the streets of the Portuguese capital. "Erdogan, killer! Portugal in silence!”, "No invasion! Freedom for Kurdistan!" shouted the activists, breaking the daily routine of the tourist center. Many flyers were distributed. Many people who passed by the street stopped their way in solidarity with the march and to hear the speeches from the megaphone.

Because of the Turkish attack in northern and eastern Syria, 300.000 people have already had to leave their homes. The Turkish attacks have killed 235 civilians, including 22 children, and injured 677. And traces of chemical weapons containing napalm and white phosphorus have been found", said an activist during the final concentration and continued: "The international community is not doing anything. NATO and the United States are complicit in this massacre. We have to be aware of what is happening there, inform ourselves beyond the mainstream media and take the streets to stop this genocide".

A call for a No Fly Zone in Rojava was present in the text of the flyers distributed on the streets. Solidarity was also expressed to the people's and women's self-defense forces, the YPG and YPJ, who are now fighting the Turkish troops and mercenaries. The activists stressed that; “Their efforts are to defend not only Rojava but the entire planet from fascist forces, represented there by the Turkish army and the jihadist groups such as ISIS. What the guerrillas stand for is a fairer world project, Democratic Confederalism, which is based on the liberation of women, the peaceful coexistence of different peoples, languages, religions and a system of ecological and anti-capitalist economics.”

In the final concentration, an activist read the letter written by women from Jinwar, the women's village in Rojava which exists for two years; “An experience of free, autonomous and self-organized life. A self-defense project where women opened a children's school, an agro-ecological garden, an Academy and a natural medicine center.”

“Defending Rojava also means this: fighting for a world based on women’s self-determination, where women can live free from machism, sexism and racism. Where all lives are worth and where all contribute to a common good,” said the activists.

The members of Make Rojava Green Again-Portugal also stressed the importance of mobilizing against the Turkish invasion, highlighting the fundamental role of Rojava's experience in ecological struggle and environmental justice.

Kurdish dances and slogans of struggle cheered the Rossio Square. "Resistance will not end today," said an activist, "other mobilization dates will be called by the Kurdish movement until the war is over” … Until Rojava is free!”

The day ended with an assembly in the square where the activists organized for the next fighting actions.
