Lower election threshold to 3 percent, says BDP

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Group deputy chairman Ýdris Baluken presented a bill of law in which he demanded the amendment of the Legislative Election Law No 2839.

Baluken asked for the lowering of the 10 percent election threshold to 3 percent and expressed the reason for the bill of law as the need for full representation of social groups numbered below the current 10 percent election threshold in Turkey.

Baluken said that; "Despite the fact that the election threshold is justified with arguments that it makes the formation of governments easier by keeping the number of parties in the Parliament low, it cannot be denied that the election threshold arrangement constitutes an obstacle to democracy. Turkey has the highest rate of the election threshold, which is 10 percent, while this rate differs between 1 and 5 in some democratic countries adopting the system of proportional representation."
