Mass detentions in Istanbul on 1 May Workers' Day

At least 60 people have been detained in Beyoğlu, and 6 in Maltepe.

Revolutionary Youth Association members who wanted to enter the Taksim Square for May 1 Workers’ Day were attacked by the police. The police stopped the young people who had a banner that read “We don’t recognize the Taksim ban” and detained 4 people, Hakan Bütün, Arzum Gündüz, Metin Coşkun and Ahmet Ediz Kankur.

Four others from the United Struggle who opened a banner in the Talimhane side of Taksim. The detainees are Doğukan (No last name), Ali Ekber Erarslan, Hıdır Devrim, Süleyman Çakmak and Pınar Kara.

On the Sıraselviler side, the police stopped a woman they suspected and demanded to check her ID. The woman was pushed to the ground and reverse handcuffed before being detained.

POLICE ANNOUNCES 60 DETENTIONS

Istanbul Police Directorate announced that 60 people have been detained in Beyoğlu so far. 56 were detained in Beşiktaş, 2 in Beyoğlu and 2 in Şişli.

DETENTIONS IN MALTEPE

Meanwhile 6 people in Maltepe were detained as they were passing through the checkpoints to get to the rally.
