Several MEPs and group leaders demanded that the attacks carried out by the invading Turkish state be stopped immediately.
18 MEPs and group leaders spoke at the session titled "Turkey's air strikes against Northern and Eastern Syria and Northern Iraq" held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The MEPs called for an immediate end to the Turkish state's attacks on Rojava and demanded the involvement of the necessary authorities regarding the closure of the airspace of Northern and Eastern Syria. MEPs said that initiatives should be launched to investigate the use of chemical weapons.
Kurdish Friendship Group Spokesperson and Social Democrats Group Andreas Schinder, Left Group Evin İncir, who is also involved in the revolutionary alliance of socialists and progressives, Independent Parliamentarian Antoni Comin i Oliveres, Democracy Group Marco Campomenosi, Greens/European Free Alliance François Alfonsi, German MEP Katrin Langensiepen from the Greens Group, Maria Isabel Coelho Santos from the Socialists Group and many other MEPs said in their speeches that the war crimes and air attacks carried out by the Turkish state should be stopped immediately.
François Alfonsi (Greens/EFA-France): Where is Mr. Borell, does the European Parliament not understand that Erdogan is a warmonger in Syria? Erdogan is launching a program to invade the region. International law is ignored. Civilians are being massacred, the Kurds are keeping real democracy alive. These attacks are a threat to the whole system and even to the world.
Özlem Demirel (GUE/NGL-Germany): There is a Christmas carol in Germany and children sing it every year, but look at the children in Syria and Rojava. These children wake up sad every morning because the Erdogan regime is attacking the Kurds and committing massacres. The Erdogan regime now wants to carry out attacks by land. This is not acceptable. We stand strongly against this and the EU should also stand against it. Mr. Borell did not attend this session, he should have been here. This is an absolutely unacceptable situation and should be stopped.
Maria Isabel Coelho Santos (Socialist Party-Portugal): Erdogan has no right to use terrorism. This is an excuse. He is attacking the Kurds in order to win the elections. With this excuse, he is attacking Northern and Eastern Syria as well as Iraqi Kurdistan. Let's be clear that these attacks are aimed at both resources and people. Erdogan is attacking the Kurdish people. We have a responsibility here to ensure that the people there no longer face these attacks. All member states should work to put a stop to these attacks. The UN should act immediately and open a corridor for humanitarian aid to reach Rojava.
Katrin Langensiepen (Green/EFA-Germany): The Kurds fought against terrorism, now they are in danger, which means we are also in danger. Mr Erdogan, you must stop bombing Northern and Eastern Syria right now. The region is no longer safe, and if Syria is not safe, we are not safe either.
Antoni Comin i Oliveres (Independent MEP from Catalonia): Turkey has said that it wants to come to the EU and act as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia, but unfortunately, we can clearly see that Turkey has become a threat to EU security. We see air strikes in Northern and Eastern Syria and Iraqi Kurdistan. A children's hospital was bombed in Kobanê. We have big problems with Turkey. We must understand who is protecting Turkey in the EU. We must ask why Mr. Borell is not here today.
Domènec Ruiz Devesa (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats / S&D-Spain): This is not the first time we have seen Turkey attack people in the region and violate international law. We must also ensure that the chemical weapons used by the Turkish armed forces are investigated because these weapons are prohibited under international law.
Evin İncir (S&D-Sweden): Before it's too late, the airspace of Rojava must be closed immediately and the Turkish state's aggression towards the Kurdish people must end.
Andreas Schieder (European Socialist Party-Austria): We must act urgently and honestly. We must act immediately to stop these attacks by Turkey. The Rojava airspace should be closed and a session should be held to decide to end these attacks.
