More HDP members detained on terror charges across Turkey

Several HDP members have been detained in Turkey on terror charges. Numerous people who were detained earlier this week are still in police custody.

In Turkey, members and administrators of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) have once again been detained on so-called terror charges. Those affected are people who were taken into custody in parallel with the Turkish invasion of the guerrilla region of Gare and in the course of the subsequent wave of arrests, including provincial and district chairpersons. Turkish authorities justify the arrests on vaguely worded charges and alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Mardin

Mehmet Selim Kılıç, former HDP chairman in Dargeçit district of Mardin province, was remanded in custody on charges of "membership of a terrorist organization." The charges against him date back to his general political activities seven years ago. Twenty-seven other people arrested at the same time as Kılıç on Feb. 15 have been released.

Aydın

A court in the province of Aydın in the Aegean region has imposed reporting requirements and ordered a ban to leave the country against 7 of the 13 female HDP activists who had been detained last Sunday in the city. The women include Ayfer Demirer (member of the party council), Aysel Bahtiyar Ünsel (co-chair of the provincial association), Mehtap Bozkurt (co-chair of the Didim district association), Sadegül Akalın (co-chair of the Söke district association), Neslihan Arviş, Saadet Açık, Azize Ergün, Nazlı Boza and Söylemez Akalın.

Batman

The co-chairs of the HDP Batman provincial association, Fatma Ablay and Ömer Kulplu, who were also detained on Monday, have been released on reporting conditions after being questioned by the court. HDP administrator Gurbet Doğan has also been released but must also report regularly to the authorities.

Serhat region

In the Serhat region of North Kurdistan, more than 80 people were taken into custody on Monday. Only 61 of the detainees have been released so far.

Urfa

Another detention was reported from Urfa where Müslüm Abbas, a Kurd from Kobanê in Rojava, was remanded in custody after 6 days in detention. The man is accused of "terror propaganda" and has been sent to the T-type prison in the city.
