Mothers in Gebze harassed by police once again

The sit-in organised by relatives of prisoners in hunger strike in Gebze has been once again blocked by the regime's police.

The relatives of the prisoners on hunger strike demanding the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, have been organising a sit-in in front of Gebze M Type Closed Prison since 9 April.

On the 20th day, the sit-in organised by the mothers who wanted to make the voices of the hunger strikers heard was blocked once again.

The Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Istanbul Provincial Organization, the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), Özgür Genç Kadın (ÖGK, Free Young Women) Science Education Aesthetic Culture and Art Research Foundation (BEKSAV) representatives, have been joined in their 3-days solidarity hunger strike by ESP members Ümit Yıldız, Makbule Ozdemir and Aygül Akyüz.

Families gathered in the HDP Gebze District Organization building and encountered police obstacles when they were walking towards their vehicles 50 meters away from the building.

The families argued with the police explaining the reason for their action.

“No matter what you do, we will not give up”, the families said.

The police threatened the families with arrest.

The police eventually attacked the families, forcing everyone to their feet. The families reacted to the police and returned to the HDP building. Families confirmed that they will resume their sit-in tomorrow.
