A musical commemoration was held in Potsdam in memory of Michael Panser, an internationalist who died in Kurdistan four years ago.
On Saturday evening, a musical memorial for Michael Panser (Nom de guerre: Xelîl Viyan / Bager Nûjiyan) took place in Potsdam at the self-managed club Spartacus. The internationalist from Germany was killed in a Turkish airstrike in the Medya Defence Zones on 14 December 2018. After a two-year break due to corona, his companions remembered him in his hometown of Potsdam.
After the room had filled up with a good 200 people, Michael Panser's voice rang out with the song of the Moorsoldaten, which he himself accompanied on the guitar. A minute's silence was then held for him and all those who fell as martyrs in the revolution. With chants of "Şehîd namirin" (Martyrs are immortal) and "Hail to international solidarity", the participants expressed their solidarity with the revolution and the resistance in Kurdistan.
Bermal Çem, who prepared the first musical contribution at the commemoration ceremony, pointed out that Michael Panser was working in the cultural field in the mountains of Kurdistan, but was unable to complete his projects. In memory of her fallen friend, she sang, among others, the song Zîlan, which she also associated with him.
In a speech, a friend of Michael Panser spoke about his life and his diaries and thus brought the audience closer to the process that Michael went through and which ultimately led him to join the People's Defence Forces (HPG).
Dîrok Diyar also spoke on behalf of the Kurdish cultural movement TEV-ÇAND. She emphasised the importance of internationalists and their work in the Kurdish freedom movement and also welcomed Michael's family, from which a strong personality emerged. The recently released epic of the PKK was "written and completed by friends of Şehîd Bager also in his memory", said Dîrok Diyar.
After further speeches were made about the ongoing poison gas operations of the Turkish state against the guerrillas in the free mountains of Kurdistan and the attacks on Rojava, friends of Michael Panser performed the song "Freiheit, Freedom, Azadî" and the Weberlied by Heine. In addition, a poem written and set to music by Zozan Qamişlo was recited at the event. Kurdish musician Jiyan Arjîn performed another song and welcomed the solidarity of so many people of different generations who came to commemorate.
Hozan Aydin then took the stage and sang songs. During his performance, the musician said that people like Michael Panser with the fire in their hearts have the power to overcome all boundaries and make them disappear.
The Widerklang Choir took the audience on a musical journey around the world. At the end, everyone stood up and sang "Marşa Rojava" together with the choir.
