Nelson Mandela still in critical condition

Former South African President Nelson Mandela remains in a critical condition in hospital, said President Jacob Zuma at a news conference in Johannesburg on Monday, following a visit to the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening.

Zuma said the medical team informed him that Mandela's condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

Zuma remarked that the doctors were doing everything they could to ensure Mandela's well-being and comfort, saying he had no further information about Mandela's current medical condition.

Mandela has been hospitalized since June 8 for a recurring lung infection. Previously, authorities had described his condition as serious but stable. His health has however deteriorated over the weekend.
