New wave of arrests hit Adana

A new wave of arrests hit the city of Adana last night and early this morning. Special operations police officers from the Adana Police Department carried out many house raids seizing residents' computers, books, newspapers and mobile telephones. Several people were taken into custody in connection with the co called "KCK (Kurdish Communities Confederation) operation."

Among the people detained in the last raids are politicians, children, journalists and Ýmams as well as a DIHA News Agency journalist.

Among the many detained in the raids in Adana are Peace and Democracy Party officials, Zeki Karataþ, M. Refik Bayav, Mahmut Ýþlek, Esma Ece, Sebahat Meþe; imams Ýsa Turan and Mecit Er; and Kurdish newspaper, Azadiya Welat workers Newal Aydýn and M. Emin Oruç.

Operation was not confined to Adana.

Indeed in Mersin last night, police detained six people, including a number of children, during a protest march against the continued isolation of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Öcalan and increasing Turkish military operations.

Dicle News Agency (DÝHA) journalist Hamdullah Keser was taken into custody in Adana after his house was raided by police. He is now being held in the Adana Police Headquarters.
