No justice for Þerzan Kurt

No justice for Þerzan Kurt

Ömer Kurt, father of 21 year-old Kurdish university student Þerzan Kurt who was murdered by police in the western province of Muðla in May 2010, strongly reacted against the release of murderer police officer after the 18th hearing in Eskiþehir on Friday.

The hearing at Eskiþehir 1st High Criminal Court was attended by Kurt’s parents and Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Batman deputy Ayla Akat. The court board sentenced police officer Gültekin Þahin (45) to eight years in prison but later released him in consideration of the 2,5 years prison sentence he has served until today.

“Justice turned its back on us”, said Kurdish student Þerzan’s father Ömer Kurt in his interview to ANF after the hearing. “They wrenched our heart by first killing our child and then releasing the murderer. We don’t trust in judiciaries because of the fact that murderers are released if they are officers of the state. This is what has been happening for many years now. Around 35 young people were murdered by police after Þerzan’s death but nobody has been taken to trial so far.”

Evaluating Þerzan Kurt case as the “case of the society”, father Kurt said that; “For this reason, the judiciaries have hurt not only my conscience but also that of the society. Þerzan was a defenseless student who was killed on street in the open. They pretended to give a sentence to the murderer but there was actually no sentence ruled.”

Ömer Kurt ended underlining that he actually didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Also speaking to ANF, BDP deputy Ayla Akat evaluated the release of Þerzan’s murderer as an indication of the fact that the AKP isn’t in search of justice and democracy at all.

“As human rights defenders, students, socialists and Kurds, we have given a struggle for the last two and a half year to see justice fulfilled but today we have seen that the AKP’s so-called ‘advanced democracy’ leads to this kind of consequences”, Akat said and pointed out that the state of impunity has become a practical experience in Turkey when it is a matter of committing crime against Kurds. “Turkey has become a state where rapists and murderers are released while those thinking and writing are put in jail”, Akat said.

“Kurds and opponent circles have no trust left in Turkish judiciary, Akat underlined and reminded of Prime Minister’s most recent statements in which he said that he had instructed the judiciaries for the removal of the parliamentary immunity of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputies.

However, we will never give up our struggle for justice, added BDP deputy.

Lawyer Mehmet Tursun, father of Baran Tursun who was also killed by police in the western province of Ýzmir, said that the Turkish judiciaries are trying to have people get used and inured to the release of murderers.
