Number of people who lost their lives in shipwreck in Nigeria rose to 76

It was reported that the number of people who lost their lives in the shipwreck last Friday in Anambra state in south-eastern Nigeria rose to 76.

The President announced that 76 people lost their lives on the ship, which was carrying 85 people.

Boat accidents are common in Nigeria. It is stated that these are often linked to overloading of ships, excessive speed, insufficient maintenance and non-compliance with traffic rules.

Anambra, one of Nigeria's 29 states, has experienced severe flooding since the beginning of the rainy season.

Floods affecting half a million people in 27 states have killed more than 300 people since the beginning of the year. At least 100,000 people were left homeless, while agricultural lands were flooded.
