Protests and clashes are going on for many days now in the capital city Ankara as police still hasn't left the Kızılay Square where tens of thousands are gathering every day in solidarity with the Taksim Gezi Park resistance. The square has witnessed brutal violence by police forces attacking the people. Hundreds were injured, dozens seriously, in the last one week.
Evrensel daily reported on Thursday that cleaning worker İrfan Tuna died late Wednesday after he was subjected to intense tear gas police used in the central Kızılay Square on Wednesday.
According to the daily, Tuna was working on the night shift at a private teaching institution in Kızılay. The daily said that for the last one week 47 year-old Tuna had been remarkably effected from the intense tear gas police used against protestors in the area during his working hours.
According to the statements of Tuna's workmates, Tuna left the institution and went out to get some fresh air with a friend of his after police attacked the protestors in the area. They said Tuna came back to the institution after they faced further tear gas and pressure water outside. "When he came back, with his hand on his heart, he said he didn't feel good. Then we called an ambulance which however came 25 minutes later because of ongoing clashes outside and the blockade of roads by police. He died of heart attack at hospital", said a workmate of his.
The prosecution office has reportedly launched an investigation into Tuna's death and demanded an autopsy considering the allegations that the heart attack was triggered by tear gas. The man was laid to rest on Thursday.
Speaking about the incident, Human Rights Association (IHD) Ankara Secretary General said "We don't know yet what will come out of the Forensic Medicine report but we think he died because of intense tear gas he was subject to".
On the other hand, thousands of protestors who gathered in the neighborhood of Gazi, in Istanbul, late Thursday were violently attacked by police as they started to march to the police headquarters in the neighborhood.
A young protestor, Duran Akbaş, aged 18, was seriously wounded as a result of the brutal police attack in which -according to eye-witnesses- Akbaş was hit on the head with tear gas canister fired by police at close range.
After being taken to Gazi Hospital, Akbaş was rushed to Okmeydanı Research and Training Hospital where he was taken under an operation, suffering from head trauma. Hospital sources confirmed that Akbaş had a trauma, however refusing to give further information about his situation.
The injury of Akbaş enhanced the anger of protestors who responded with stones and molotov cocktails to the police attack which continued for a long time after the incident as well.
