Orhan Pamuk: No sign of a peaceful solution in sight
Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk commented on the Gezi Park resistance at the festival "Repubblica delle İdee" (the Republic of Ideas) he joined in Italy, reported Doğan News Agency (DHA) on Saturday.
Speaking at the session titled “of Innocence and Love”, Pamuk said that “Things of importance are taking place in Turkey right now. The country is going through a kind of change process. I am concerned over the happenings and the future of my country, also very sorry to see that there is no sign of efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful solution between the government and protestors”.
Also expressing concerns over the situation of politics and the freedom of expression in Turkey, Pamuk said the followings as a writer from Istanbul;
“Any single person living in Istanbul surely has a moment in that area to remember. I understand and embrace those people who are standing there today. I am of the opinion that the government is making a great mistake by trying to construct a new building at such a delicate spot and rapidly uprooting trees for the construction of shopping malls. One important thing to remember is the fact that Taksim has a political history. I saw conservative, nationalist, socialist and social democrat circles and soldiers passing the square. I hope the conflict ends in peace”.
Speaking to DHA after the session, Pamuk said the government must display an accommodating attitude in order to reach a conclusion. “What we all struggle for is to save the Taksim Square. Decisions at the square must be reached all together”, he said, noting that he respected the anger of protestors which -he added- was also being told about around the world today.
