More than 60 people were taken into custody on Saturday as a result of simultaneous police raids in a number of addresses in the provinces of Batman, Siirt, Mardin and Mersin. The operations mainly targeted executives of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), MEYA-DER and KURDÎ-DER as well as mayors, municipality workers and council members.
The raids in Batman targeted the BDP office, Batman branches of MEYA-DER and KURDÎ-DER, Peace Mothers Initiative office and many houses. A number of people were taken into custody, among them being BDP Batman co-chairs and executives and Peace Mothers Initiative activists.
Two BDP executives and two other people were taken into custody in the police operation in Mardin where BDP offices and many houses were raided early in the morning. The operation in Mardin also expanded to the district of Kýzýltepe, Savur, Nusaybin and Mazýdaðý. Two BDP and three DTK (Democratic Society Congress) members were detained in Kýzýltepe, while a number of houses and places were raided by police in 14 neighborhoods and six villages of Nusaybin where many BDP executives were arrested in the scope of the operation. BDP Mazýdaðý district chair was also taken into custody in the operation.
16 other people were taken into custody in the operation in Siirt where BDP and IHD (Human Rights Association) offices as well as many other addresses were raided upon the instruction by Public Prosecutor of Diyarbakýr. BDP Mersin worker Tahir Ertürk was also taken into custody in Mersin in the scope of the same operation.
