Turkish Parliament will be holding an election for a new speaker of parliament today as the political crisis remains ongoing. Last week the Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block deputies did boycott parliament altogether while the Republican's People Party (CHP) entered the Assembly but did not take part to the oath-taking ceremony.
Three candidates will run in the elections to be held in Parliament on Monday, with the AK Party's Cemil Çiçek being the strongest candidate.
Çiçek announced his candidacy and was followed by the opposition Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP) Tunca Toskay. In what is seen as an unexpected move, another AK Party deputy, Zelkif Kazdal, announced his candidacy for the post on Saturday.
Parliament will convene to elect its new speaker at 2 p.m. on Monday. The ruling party holds the majority of seats in Parliament with 327 seats.
The CHP is also known to support Çiçek’s bid. However the party announced that it will not attend the session during which the new speaker is to be elected.
