A People's Referendum on Irish unity is to be held in the border towns of Strabane and Lifford today as part of the United Ireland - You Decide campaign.

Last May the people of Crossmaglen (Armagh) and Creggan Upper (Louth) voted overwhelmingly in support of Irish reunification in a People's Referendum held there.

Chairperson for the campaign in Strabane/Lifford, Grace McDermott, told An Phoblacht that following on from the success of the campaign in May it was decided to have a People's Referendum in the Donegal and Tyrone towns.

The United Ireland - You Decide campaign office will be open in Lifford from Monday 4 November to provide people with information and also allow anyone aged 16 and over to register to vote. Voting will take place today with polling centres in both towns.

Elected representatives of various political parties will also be invited to take part in a public debate on Irish reunification ahead of the vote, while there will also be youth and community events organised.
