People shot with live ammunition at Kobanê border

People gathering in the area where solidarity tents with the Kobanê resistance were destroyed by Turkish soldiers have been attacked by Turkish troops and police with water cannons and teargas at the border of Kobanê yesterday. Troops are also reported to have fired live ammunition.

While soldiers and police used water cannons and armoured vehicles against the protestors in the attack, it is reported that a lot of teargas has been used. The protestors responded to the attack by pelting the troops and police with stones and fireworks.

Over 100 people were wounded in the attacks which continued all day. It is reported that 30 protestors were seriously wounded. While 30 people affected by teargas and canisters were taken to different hospitals in Urfa, other patients were treated in Suruç Hospital. The Turkish police targeted journalists and reporters, not allowing them to take pictures.

The journalist Turabi Kişin was wounded in the legs on account of a teargas canister fired by the police.

Tension remains high at the border while more and more people continue to gather in protest against the ongoing Turkish-backed attacks targeting the Kobanê Canton of West Kurdistan. Thousands of police and soldiers have already been deployed in the Pirsus (Suruç) area where they blocked the main road leading to the border yesterday. Thousands from across North Kurdistan have also left for the border in solidarity with the Kobanê resistance.

Following the brutal attack of security forces on the Kurdish people at the border, HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) MP Faysal Sarıyıldız, who is also at the border along with many other deputies, met military officials today, warning that they would bear the ocnsequences in the event of an intervention. "You cannot expect the people here to remain silent while a massacre rehearsal is taking place in Kobanê.
