Police attacked the group who gathered at Istanbul's Galatasaray Square on Sunday to remember Turkish revolutionaries Deniz Gezmiş, Hüseyin İnan and Yusuf Aslan who were executed on 6 May 1972.
The brutal attack also targeted ANF reporter Zeynep Kuray and DIHA reporters Rojda Korkmaz and Sevdiye Ergürbüs whom police assaulted and attempted to take into custody.
According to reports, police attempted to slap Korkmaz in the face and to break Kuray's left arm in a police vehicle. The three reporters were later released from the police car as a result of the strong reaction by press workers who were also in the area to follow the commemoration ceremony. Korkmaz, Ergürbüz and Kuray said they would file a criminal complaint against police officers who brutally attacked them in the area.
A police commander pointed Kuray as a target, saying her that “You have injured my friend. Are you happy now? Besides, you have been released from the prison only recently”. In response to the police commander's threat, Kuray reminded that she was a journalist and pointed out that nobody would prevent her from doing her job.
Following the police intervention, the group gathered at Mis Street where they were once again attacked by police teams. A police officer was wounded in the clashes after which police assaulted ten people and took them into custody.
