Police attacked LGBTI parade in Istanbul

The 17th LGBTI and Pride Week in Istanbul was banned by the Istanbul Governor's Office.

The Governorship of Istanbul announced that it would not allow the parade take place in Taksim, the committee asked for permission to hold it in Bakırköy district.

However, the Governorship denied permission for the parade to take place there.

Anti-Riot Water Cannon Vehicles (TOMA) and police squads were deployed around Taksim Square and Istiklal Avenue, where the Parade was planned to be held.

The Pride Parade organisers read a statement for the press in Tepebaşı and on Hayriye Street. After the statement on Hayriye Street, the police attacked the crowd again. Some reports spoke of five people been taken into custody throughout the day.
