Police attacked rally in Bitlis

Police has attacked a rally in Bitlis. The rally was organized by BDP to support Kurdish political prisoners who have been on hunger strike since 12 September. The prisoners demand

1) provisions to use their mother language in education and the public sphere,

2) the removal of obstacles preventing imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan from negotiating with the Turkish state, and

3) the recognition of the right to use Kurdish language in Turkish courts

Police attacked the demonstration with tear gas and batoncharged the crowd. Many were injured including BDP Bitlis MP Hüsamettin Zenderlioðlu, ÝHD Bitlis president Hasan Çoban. Five people have been taken into custody, among them two students and three BDP members, Zennur Damar, Dr. Zeynettin Avcil, BDP Tatwan former mayor assistant Nasýn Ölçer.
