Police attacks BDP demo in Amed
The demo BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) staged in the main Kurdish city Amed on Sunday was denied permission by police on the grounds of the “illegal” banners and flags protestors carried, those of PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) and KCK (Kurdish Communities Union).
Tens of thousands gathered in front of BDP office to join the demo which was organized to call on the government to take urgent steps in the ongoing resolution process.
Three other demos BDP staged in the Adana, Mersin and Antep were also joined by thousands of people who demanded a peaceful and democratic solution to the Kurdish question. Protestors also strongly condemned the Lice attack in which one person was killed, Medeni Yıldırım, 18, and ten others were wounded in the village of Yakacık on 28 June.
After surrounding the mass in front of the BDP building with riot control vehicles, police units attacked the protestors in Amed with intense pressure water and tear gas as they insisted on starting their march to Koşuyolu Park.
Many people were wounded and rushed to hospitals around, while many others were taken into custody during the police attack on Turgut Özal Boulevard.
Hundreds of people sheltered in the BDP office into which police also fired tear gas, as well as into the houses of the people who supported the march by chanting slogans from their houses.
Clashes between protestors and police continued in many areas till late evening.
In a statement to the press in front of BDP office, BDP co-chair Gültan Kışanak condemned the police attack which she commented as a consequence of AKP government's attitude encouraging attack on protestors. Kışanak said that police brutally suppressed the people's democratic and basic right to demonstrate, pointing out that the demo had been organized to voice the steps necessary for the progress of the resolution process. BDP co-chair said the fascist police attack on the demo was a conspiracy against peace and constituted an obstacle to the solution of the Kurdish question. She criticized the government for siding with clashes in response to Kurdish people's demand for democratic politics. "The government needs to decide whether it wants a solution and peace or war and clashes so that we can proceed on our way according to it", she added.
