Police attacks protestors at Taksim Square -FLASH

Istanbul police have attacked thousands who have gathered at Taksim Square in the evening after the call Taksim Solidarity Platform made to condemn the killing of Ahmet Atakan by police in the southern province of Hatay last night.

Having already surrounded the square and closed the Gezi Park before the mass demonstration, which was set to take place at 7 p.m., police intervened the crowd using intense tear gas and pressure water.

Demonstrators are responding to police with stones and fireworks. Clashes are continuing in the area.

Thousands who have also gathered in the district of Kadıköy have started to march to Taksim.

Large numbers of riot police teams have been mobilized not only in Istanbul but also in the Turkish capital Ankara where nine mass protest demos will be staged in the evening to condemn the police violence that has taken another life today.

Tens of thousands are taking to the streets in a number of cities to display their reaction against the killing of the young boy.

Clashes in the neighborhood of Armutlu, in Hatay province, are also continuing since police attacked people who started a march after Atakan's funeral.
